VoiceThread in Desire2Learn | September 23rd, 2014

In this workshop, you will learn how to create media-based conversations with your students using the online program VoiceThread. Learn how to upload images and digital video clips into your VoiceThread digital slideshow, record comments and then share the conversation with your students. FLTP Share Fair Guest Presentation | The Gamification of Learning Outcomes | Friday, April 25th, 2014

We're excited to announce our Spring 2014 Guest Speaker Presentation which coincides with our
FLTP Share Fair. Please join us on Friday, April 25th for a presentation by Russell Moon and Nick Einterz from the International English Center. No RSVP needed!

The Gamification of Learning Outcomes
Russell Moon | Academic Technology Consultant International English Center
Nick Einterz | Lecturer International English Center
Friday, April 25th
12:00PM - 1:00PM
Hellems 145

Student motivation is an issue of concern for ESL/EFL instructors, and students are motivated by games. The emerging methodology of gamification takes both facts into account. Classroom gamification methods leverage the motivational aspects of games without necessarily requiring student participation in traditional games. By adding gamification methods to outcomes tracking in Desire2Learn, the presenters attempted to increase learner motivation by allowing students to track their own outcomes online.

Gamification methods include goals, feedback, leveling and rules (Kapp 2012 and McGonigal 2011). Using Desire2Learn and a class website, the presenters have created a comprehensive system for outcomes tracking. The system links each class activity to specific learner outcomes [goals], which are well-defined to ensure the benefits of gamification (Hays 2005). Students track their progress toward a given outcome online to see which activities must be completed to fulfill outcome requirements [feedback], and new outcomes become available upon fulfillment [leveling]. Because activities are tracked by D2L, instructors set point thresholds for satisfactory activity completion [rules]. Gamification is closely linked with theories of intrinsic motivation (Kapp 2012 and McGonigal 2011). Intrinsically rewarding work requires a clear goal, actionable next steps and immediate feedback (McGonigal 2011), all of which are provided by the gamified tracking system. Agency and collaboration are also key factors in intrinsic motivation (Lepper and Malone 1988), so students are given the opportunity to choose which activities to complete in fulfillment of outcomes and can collaborate on certain activities.

This presentation provides gamification methods and techniques that can be employed in Reading, Writing, Structure and Listening-Speaking courses, across multiple levels of language. Attendees will participate in a gamified activity to experience the motivational hook of gamification. Quantitative and qualitative results from student feedback and detailed implementation procedures for using gamification in different classroom settings are also provided.

This presentation is the guest speaker event of the FLTP Share Fair, a full day in which the foreign language community at CU Boulder presents on how they incorporate technology in the language classroom.

The full schedule will be available soon at http://altec.colorado.edu/

The deadline for proposal submissions for the Share Fair is Monday, April 21st at midnight. To submit a proposal visit: http://tinyurl.com/sharefair2014

Improving Listening Comprehension with Technology | March 12th OR 13th, 2014

Next week is the fourth workshop of the semester for the FLTP, "Improving Listening Comprehension with Technology". ALTEC's Director Dr. Mark Knowles will lead this workshop.

Second language teachers are very good at testing listening comprehension, but how good are we at teaching it? If asked to describe the listening comprehension process and then how best to teach listening, how well would we do? Since listening comprehension is one of the skills our students report feeling most apprehensive about, greater attention to this skill is a long time in coming. In this workshop we will look at some of the gaps that researchers Larry Vangergrift and Christine Goh are helping to fill and we will see how learners can activate processes of skilled listeners. The workshop will also focus on practical and successful ideas for listening tasks that use technology.

Next week is the second workshop of the semester for ALTEC's Foreign Language Technology Program. The workshop is on Flipped Language Tutorials using a technology called Camtasia Studio.

What is flipping? The flipped classroom is a teaching model in which, what we typically do in the classroom (e.g. instruction) is done at home, while the practice is done in the classroom.

Come to learn how to use Camtasia Studio to create flipped grammar and vocabulary tutorials that your students can use for personalized learning in the online environment.

** ALTEC has purchased Camtasia Studio licenses and has them installed in our PC lab, thus there is no need to bring your own device for this workshop! Do please bring a
